It’s not all about promoting our own books.

I had the great pleasure of working with Galen Rowell, one of the world’s foremost outdoor photographers, who tragically died in a plane crash in the Eastern Sierras of California seven years ago. He provided the photography for Coastal California published by Compass American Guides, now an imprint of Fodor’s. Random House in their wisdom now distribute Galen’s wonderful California the Beautiful which has been reissued by Welcome Books http://welcomebooks.com/californiathebeautiful/ which Galen shot for Peter Beren, then publisher of Sierra Club Books http://peterberen.blogspot.com/. The sierra Club is a wonderful organisation founded by John Muir in 1892 and does great work protecting the environment throughout the US and Canada http://www.sierraclub.org.

  1. I was lucky enough to work with Peter when the first edition of this book was coming together and spent many hours in Galen’s gallery and work space — it was still in Berkeley at the time — selecting the photographs that found their way into that first volume. Barbara was often there as well, working on her own book as a pilot which was later published by 10 Speed. The tragedy of their both dying together, passengers in a tiny plane not dissimilar from Barbara’s own, and just months after they moved to Bishop was horrendous for everyone who knew them. That it happened just before their books were published made it worse. When it went out of print, I republished under my own Welcome Books imprint. The 2nd larger, more expansive edition was made possible by both Peter Beren and Mountain Light’s (Galen’s gallery in Bishop) kindness. Random House does distribute Welcome Books but did not actually publish California The Beautiful. The only thing I regret is not putting Peter’s name on the cover under Galen’s.
